Over the past six months, I have been trying all kinds of diet programs and exercise that could help me lose weight. I tried the military diet, GM diet, banana diet and even those meal plans on Women’s magazine. As much as I believed on these programs, it did not work out the way it should be– well at least for me. There’s a time when I have to starve myself and this result to binge eating at night. Over the past six months, I did not gain weight. But I did not lose any either. That’s when I realized I am done obsessing on diets.
Diet is restricting oneself to small amounts or special kinds of food in order to lose weight. Though this works for some, this is not for everyone– and this is definitely not for me. How many times have you told yourself that you are going to start eating right and after a few days, you find yourself giving in? The thing with diets is that we fell restricted, and when we feel restricted, we feel deprived. I don’t know about you but the more I feel deprived, the more I want something. As a result, I binge eat, and then I give in– and the cycle goes on and on. I was on a weight loss plateau for a long time and just when I was about to give up.. I discovered ketogenic diet.
Ketogenic diet is a high fat, low carb diet that forces the body to burn fats than carbohydrates. It also requires you to cut off sugar cold turkey but gives you lots of health benefits. Instead of counting calories, you count your macros. In a day you should get 70% of fat, 20% of protein and only 10% of carbs.
The reason why I decided to go keto is simple– it looks easy. I was even sceptic at first, it does not look like a diet to me. And it was not. Keto is a lifestyle. With other diets, as what I have said a while ago, I feel so deprived all the time. I do not get to eat what I want. Keto is completely different, I get to eat everything I want, especially because I love my meat. And since I am on a fat diet, I never get hungry and my body automatically tells me when I should stop eating. It makes me full right away. Second, it makes me aware of what I am eating. I have discovered that a cube of sugar has 4g of sugar which is equals to 12 calories! I also learn how to read nutritional labels and to seriously count my macros. Apart from that, this lifestyle has forced me to cook and prepare my meals which I think is a good thing.
Of course this lifestyle have some cons too. The hardest thing I encountered is cutting sugar off my life. It’s hard because I have a sweet tooth, like I can eat chocolates everyday. It’s not just chocolates that I have to give up.. I have to avoid sugar in all forms. That includes fruits, juice, pop, gravy and ketchup. Also, some keto friendly ingredients does not come cheap. Like for example, flour. A regular flour would cost me $4 but since flour is not allowed in keto, I need to buy coconut flour.. which cost $23! Believe me it’s not easy. But once you get the hang of it, everything comes effortlessly. I also learned how to make desserts which are keto friendly.
So far I already lost 11.5 lbs in a month because of this lifestyle and I couldn’t be any happier. It’s not just the weight lost actually, I feel more healthy now and my sugar cravings has decreased drastically. I plan to continue this lifestyle long term and I’m looking forward to the progress I am going to make as time pass 🙂
